Ratnagiri settlement study

Location : Mirya, Ratnagiri

We were studying the settlements situated behind the Jetty in mirkarwada . It is a densely Muslim populated area and their major occupation is fishing. While we were exploring the place, we found out that maximum fishermen, the boat owners etc. Resided in these settlements. They said it was convenient to have a house close by to their workplace. 

The houses were not planned and built but rather just placed unsystematically creating small passage ways (gallis) that emerged from the main road. The houses were built on a slope hence kept increasing in altitude as we moved forward into the gallis.

We walked in these gallis to get a sense of the space. we then drew several plans and sections to understand the relationship of these settlements with the jetty and the environment around.

We could see a clear distinction between the typology of the houses in Mirkarwada and Mirya village.
